There are places on this Earth where you know you're in the presence of the Divine. Years ago, these Sacred spaces weren’t shown on a map, but over time, the word gets out, All Trails posts directions, Social Media buzzes with selfies and photo bombs, and the energy in the space shifts. I had originally heard about Mossbrae falls from a friend, did some research on the location, and set out at dawn one morning, getting a head start on the masses who slept in, ate a leisurely breakfast, and missed the best part of the day. This hike parallels train tracks, an urban legend says people have jumped into the river and died to escape an oncoming train.
My journey was quick, the train that chugged along the tracks slowed down for me, the conductor waving as he turned around a bend. I heard the waterfalls before I saw them, felt the temperature drop 10 degrees from the swirling mist, inhaled the clean fresh oxygen emanating from the seeping walls. I was blessed to be the only person walking through swirling pools of frigid water, the sound of the cascading water lulling me into a space of complete presence. I wandered into the river, finding a bible and a cairn of rocks left for seekers. Still and awakened, I glimpsed water sprites darting in and out of the mossy walls, or maybe they were bluebirds of happiness.
An hour later as voices pierced the calm, I stood in slow motion and reluctantly left to continue my journey.
