My Little Chickadee
Old Man Winter
I have been photographing Lake Tahoe for over 14 years and truly thought I'd seen everything. A few nights ago, I headed out in the middle of a thunderstorm for a little hike at sunset, camera and tripod on my shoulder. I was hoping for rainbows, but instead found these glorious mammatus clouds which turned all kinds of oh my god awesome as the sun set. And of course, I was on the other side of a huge pile of rocks photographing a fractured rainbow. You've never seen anyone scrambling and jumping over boulders as fast as I did, trusting the traction on my Salomon hiking boots, frantically seeking the perfect composition. And suddenly, there it was, right in front of me. A whole group of kids, lined up on these jagged rocks, iPhones in hand, just as enraptured as I was by this magnificent sky. Yes it was this vivid, yes I love this image, and yes I was, and am still completely in awe that I didn't slip and fall on my butt.
